International Construction Procurement

See all formats and editions

The internationalisation of construction is rapidly expanding and its procurement becoming more complex and subject to scrutiny and change in a way that has not happened before. The function of project management in managing these rapid changes and developments within the context of construction procurement is in need of clear articulation and explanation, in order that those involved in the construction process can understand the complexities of procurement and improve its effective management.

This book is concerned with the construction procurement process and its project management. It addresses the issue of culture and how this impacts on the selection and implementation of a procurement system. The issue of sustainability as a driver of the construction process is also explained and the role of clients is considered as key actors in the procurement process - both as initiators and managers.

Procurement systems - past, current and burgeoning - are discussed and analysed, and the role of project management within the procurement process is explained. The book also considers the need for improvements in the management of construction information, if the moves towards closer integration between design and construction are to be achieved. Detailed case studies of controversial construction are used to demonstrate particular procurement systems and an informed view of their successes and failures is offered.

This is the first book to consider construction procurement in an international context and to take account of the cultural and development implications of particular nationalities in the formulation of a procurement strategy.
