Albert Nobbs (Close) is a woman who has been posing as a man since the age of 14, to enable her to work as a butler in Dublin's most upmarket hotel.

But Albert's identity is shaken to the core when she meets charismatic painter Hubert Page (Janet McTeer) and young maid Helen (Mia Wasikowska), and formulates a plan to leave her life of servitude behind.
