DCI Hayes, part of the Melrose Unit, a special CID branch set up to deal with high-profile cases linked to national security, has a new detective superintendent, Mo Prentice.

At six foot, blonde and very determined, she's no pushover, as Hayes is finding out.Their fist case together is a high-profile missing person. Or is it a murder? The trouble is, there's no body and no real investigation; just an AWOL MP, a car crash, a bad case of amnesia and a murder confession obtained under hypnosis, which an eminent psychologist is convinced is indicative of false memory syndrome.
