Born Free

Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers star in this 1960s drama based on the book by Joy Adamson about her life in Africa.

Joy (McKenna) and her game warden husband George (Travers) live in Kenya surrounded by dangerous animals whose mere existence pose a threat to humans and livestock.

While on patrol, George and his rangers kill a lion and lioness to protect themselves, but they leave behind three orphaned lion cubs.

Feeling guilty, Joy and George adopt the cubs, hand-rearing them until they are healthy enough to be rehomed in a zoo.

Joy, however, has become attached to one particular cub that she names Elsa and as she grows bigger and bigger Joy fights to keep her in the family.
