European Community legislation for controlling risks of industrial installations is contained in the Sevesco Directive, named after an accidental release of dioxins from a pharmaceutical plant near Sevesco in Italy.

This directive has been updated and amended since the original 1982 version and requires industrial managers to identify, assess and inform national authorities about aspects of their manufacturing operations which could give rise to major accidents and the measures they have taken to control those risks.

This colour booklet, written by the originating Directorate within the European Commission, explains the Directive and the legal responsibilities of manufacturing industries operating potentially harmful processes.
