Comedy road movie based on the true story of pioneering country rock musician Gram Parsons (Gabriel Macht), who died of a drug overdose in 1973.

Before he died, he and his close friend Phil Kaufman (Johnny Knoxville) promised each other that, whichever man died first, the other would take his remains to the beautiful desert location of Joshua Tree in California and release the dead man's spirit by setting fire to the body.

True to his word, Kaufman rushes to carry out his promise as soon as he hears of his friend's demise - but he hasn't counted on the adverse reactions of Gram's gold-digging ex-girlfriend Barbara Mansfield (Christina Applegate), or the simple wishes of his father, Stanley (Robert Foster).

A bizarre chase across the desert ensues, with Kaufman enlisting the help of his spaced-out hippy friend Larry Oster-Berg (Michael Shannon), who happens to own a hearse...
