As popular singer Grace Davis (Ross)'s fame reaches an all-time high, she begins to worry about whether she will be capable of evolving her sound and moving in a different direction.

Her assistant, Maggie (Johnson) although inspired by Grace is becoming increasingly frustrated being at her beck and call and has her own aspirations of becoming a music producer.

Encouraging Grace to take the leap and try something different despite the objections from her manager, Jack (Ice Cube), Maggie begins to work with Grace to help both women realise their ambitions.
