Jim Halsey (Howell) is driving from Chicago to San Diego when he picks up hitchhiker John Ryder (Hauer) in Texas.

However, Ryder is a dangerous murderer who dares Halsey to prevent him from killing again.

When Halsey manages to escape, Ryder initiates a brutal game of cat and mouse, leaving the bodies of his latest victims for Halsey to find.
