Having encountered the beautiful singer Edie Story (Margaret Lockwood), Bob Fielding (Michael Rennie) approaches her to form an alliance with him against copyright pirates after a song is unwittingly sold off to another publisher.

Bob has stiff competition from fellow publisher Jim Knight (Peter Graves) however, who also has Edie at the centre of his affection.
