After setting himself on fire while high on cocaine, stand-up comedian Jo Jo Dancer (Pryor) lies comatose in a hospital bed.

As his spirit observes his body, he recalls his childhood and all of the obstacles he overcame to become a comedian.

However, success came hand in hand with drug use and destructive behaviour.

If he regains consciousness, will he finally be able to break the cycle?
