Former bounty hunter Joe Kidd (Eastwood) is recruited by wealthy New Mexico landowner Frank Harlan (Duvall) to help deal with an uprising led by Mexican revolutionary Luis Chama (Saxon).

Although reluctant to get involved at first, Kidd finally agrees when Harlan informs him Chama has raided his own ranch while on a rampage through the county.

However, when Kidd witnesses Harlan's ruthless treatment of local villagers while attempting to flush Chama out, he decides to take matters into his own hands.
