Inspector Jean Darblay (Stephanie Turner) is one of the few senior policewomen in the country, who takes charge of the station in the Lancashire town of Hartley.

Fighting prejudice from the other officers as well as fighting crime, Inspector Darblay (known as 'Juliet Bravo' from her call sign, 'JB') has to prove that she has what it takes to run a busy police station.

In this series, Darblay has to deal with a disturbed soldier on leave from Northern Ireland, as well as with a spate of arson attacks and a direct challenge from a junior officer to her leadership.
