Kansas (Hopper) is the stuntman on a Western being filmed in a small Peruvian village.

When one of the cast is killed in an accident, Kansas attempts to get out of the movie business by settling down with local prostitute Maria (Stella Garcia).

As the rural community begin re-enacting their own violent scenes for real, unaware of the fictitious nature of filming, Kansas finds himself drawn into a disorientating world where the difference between reality and fantasy is unclear.
