Lamartine a decouvert le Levant en 1832. A son retour en France, il s'erige en porte-parole de la cause ottomane.

Apres sa defaite face au prince Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte en 1848, il decide de partir en Orient, ou le sultan ottoman Abdulmecid lui octroie un grand domaine agricole, Burgaz Ova, la "e;Limagne d'Asie"e;.

En qualite d'exploitant agricole, Lamartine se lance, a l'age de 60 ans, dans l'aventure de la vigne, songeant meme a faire venir des familles de vignerons du Maconnais.

Mais faute de capitaux, ses projets echoueront. C'est cette periode peu connue que l'auteur analyse ici.
