War veteran Jack Burns (Douglas) is a ranch hand who feels alienated by the advances of modernity.

After his friend Paul Bondi (Michael Kane) is jailed for assisting immigrants Burns gets himself deliberately arrested so he can help Bondi escape, however, Bondi has too much at stake, namely his family, and would rather serve his sentence.

Burns decides to escape on his own and is then pursued by Sheriff Morey Johnson (Walter Matthau) across the country.
