The Man in the Glass Booth

Part of the American Film Theatre Collection, in which classic American stage plays are transferred to the big screen, this play by actor-turned-playwright Robert Shaw is inspired by the real-life war crimes trial of Adolf Eichmann.

Maximilian Schiel was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Arthur Goldman, a New York tycoon living in luxury in a Manhattan penthouse in the mid 1960s.

Despite his lavish lifestyle, Goldman is deeply paranoid and verging on madness, shocking his assistant, Charlie (Lawrence Pressman) with his ourageously irreverent banter about Jewish life.

Then Israeli secret agents capture Goldman and put him on trial for Nazi war crimes, alleging that he is not the Jewish businessman he claims to be but is in fact Adolf Dorff, an SS colonel and mass killer.

As the trial goes on and conspiracy theories are unravelled, Goldman and his accusers must acknowledge their guilt and face up to bitter truths about themselves.
