Michael Powell: Early Works

Collection of five early films directed by Michael Powell before his partnership with Emeric Pressburger was formed.

In 'Rynox' (1931) a wealthy businessman is being threatened by a mysterious stranger.

When he is found murdered, his son takes over his company and begins searching for the man responsible for his father's death.

In the process, he uncovers a tragic secret. In 'Hotel Splendide' (1932) a thief is released from prison and travels to the site where he buried his stolen jewels only to discover that a hotel has been built there in the interim. 'The Night of the Party' (1934) is set during a dinner party hosted by the ruthless Lord Studholme (Malcolm Keen).

When he is murdered during a party game, the police must uncover which of the guests is responsible for the crime.

In 'Her Last Affaire' (1936) a politician's wife is found dead at a country inn but the investigation stalls when the only suspect has an alibi.

Finally, 'Behind the Mask' (1944) is an abridged version of 'The Man Behind the Mask' (1936) and follows an attempted theft at a masked ball.
