"There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person.

If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting." Anne of Green Gables (1908) by Lucy Maud Montgomery recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, a creative and smart 11-year-old orphan girl.

She is mistakenly sent for adoption to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm.

Set in the late 19th century, in the fictional town of Avonlea, the novel portrays Anne's struggles as she makes her way through the Cuthberts, her classmates at school, and the townfolks managing to earn love and respect of people around her.
