Danny Muldoon (John Candy) is a 38-year-old cop who still lives with his aggressively dominating mother (Maureen O'Hara).

When he meets and falls for Theresa (Ally Sheedy), a young woman who works in a funeral parlour, everyone advises him against falling in love - especially his brother, who would much rather Danny stayed home to look after Mum.
