Papusza

Biopic drama based on the life of little-known Polish-Romani poet Bronislawa Wajs, known as Papusza, from writer-director duo Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze.

Literate from a young age, despite the consternation of her family who forbade her from reading, Papusza (Jowita Budnik) marries at 15 and begins performing songs with her husband Dionizy Wajs (Zbigniew Walerys).

In 1949, poet Jerzy Ficowski (Antoni Pawlicki) hears one of her performances, befriends the couple and translates her lyrics from Romani to Polish and publishes them.

This simultaneously projects her to fame and recognition, and destroys her home life while she is rejected by the gypsy community.
