When Lady Pagwell (Diana Rigg) passes away she leaves a substantial amount of money to create a fund for inventors.

For Professor Branestawm this could be the answer to his financial ruin.

Councillor Harold Haggerstone (David Mitchell) is determined that the quirky professor sees none of it, however, and demands that an invention competition be held to decide the recipient of the money while trying to rig it by entering his own inventor.
