Six films starring Richard Gere. In 'An Officer and a Gentleman' (1982), US Navy recruit Zack Mayo (Gere) begins the thirteen-week basic training course that will qualify him to attend flight school - and immediately comes into conflict with the tough, no-nonsense Sergeant Foley (Louis Gossett Jr).

Foley selects Mayo as the special recipient of his sadistic attentions, but the recruit refuses to be broken and meanwhile finds solace in his developing relationship with local factory girl Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger). 'Days of Heaven' (1978) is a historical drama set in early 1900s America.

Migrant labourer Bill (Gere) goes on the run with younger sister Linda (Linda Manz) and soulmate Abby (Brooke Adams) after murdering his foreman.

The three of them find work on the land of a wealthy wheat farmer (Sam Shepard), who lives alone and is slowly dying of a wasting disease.

He begins to fall in love with Abby, and Bill - who is masquerading as her brother to improve the chance of an inheritance - encourages her to lead the farmer on.

For a while the four are happy, but tensions rise when Abby genuinely begins to fall for the farmer.

In 'Internal Affairs' (1990), corrupt cop Dennis Peck (Gere) has a hand in every racket going, running a small empire of money laundering, bribery and favour-selling in suburban Los Angeles.

His influence extends so far that when Internal Affairs officer Raymond Avila (Andy Garcia) begins to suspect something, a number of leading police officers speak up on Peck's behalf, claiming that he is a model cop.

Peck thinks he's safe, and that no one can touch him - but the single-minded Avila stays on the case, determined to see justice done. 'Intersection' (1994) starts and ends with a car crash involving its architect protagonist, Vincent Eastman (Gere).

Telling his story through flashbacks, we learn that he has recently started an affair with young journalist Olivia (Lolita Davidovich) after leaving his wife Sally (Sharon Stone).

However, Vincent still works with his wife, and is considering going back to her and his ballet dancer daughter, Meaghan (Jennifer Morrison).

In 'Primal Fear' (1996), cynical lawyer Martin Vail (Gere), always keen to occupy the media spotlight, jumps at the chance of defending an altar boy accused of murdering the local archbishop.

However, as he uncovers a nest of corruption and finds himself pitted against a prosecutor who is also his ex-lover, Vail soon begins to question his methods and approach.

In 'American Gigolo' (1980), Armani-clad male escort Julian Kaye (Gere) leads a comfortable life offering his services to the rich women of Los Angeles.

Well paid for his efforts, he buys the best clothes, eats in the finest restaurants and spends his days hob-nobbing with the cream of society.

But when one of his clients is murdered and the police place him as suspect number one, Julian suddenly finds himself rejected by all of his rich friends.

Worse still, he discovers that he cannot offer his alibi because it revolves around a woman who refuses to come forward.
