The Roman Polanski Collection

Triple bill of Roman Polanski's psychological dramas from the 1960s.

In 'Knife in the Water' (1962) a successful sportswriter and his wife invite a strange young boy to join them on their sailboat.

The husband, jealous of the boy's youth, continually provokes him, chiding him for his lack of prowess, in swimming and sailing.

However, the tense atmosphere on board comes to a head when, during a quarrel, the husband flings the boy's pocket knife into the water.

The boy jumps in to retrieve it, but does not resurface.

In 'Repulsion' (1965), Polanski's first English-language feature, a young Belgian woman (Catherine Deneuve) is left alone in a Kensington apartment when her sister goes away.

She becomes increasingly unstable, experiencing hallucinations which have their roots in her fear of male sexuality.

When two aggressive men turn up, her tortured nightmares spill into real-life violence.

In 'Cul-De-Sac' (1966) George (Donald Pleasence) and Teresa (Francoise Dorleac) are an eccentric couple who have retreated to an island off the north-east coast of Britain, where they live in a large, dank castle.

Their isolated existence is disrupted when the island is visited by two gangsters.

The collection also includes a selection of Polanski's short films from the 1960s as well as interviews with the director.
