APL

The acreditation of prior learning (APL) is a key component of the current drive towards competence-based education and training.

Its use is increasing rapidly in the UK, particularly in the context of NVQs, and throughout the world.

Through APL individuals' skills and knowledge can be formally recognized and accredited irrespective of how, when or why they were obtained.

The process is being applied in academic, training and employment environments.

Since APL builds on the strengths individuals already possess, they are often able to obtain qualifications in less time and at less expense. Organizations also gain from APL by making better use of existing training and education resources.

They do not have to teach people what they already know and can do.
