Yorkshire headmistress Sarah Burton (Dorothy Tutin) is a left-wing feminist who is disgusted to realise that her plans for her pupils will be stymied by the social injustices they face.

She also finds herself falling in love with Tory landowner Robert Carne (Nigel Davenport), whose wife is suffering from insanity, and whose core beliefs stand in opposition to her own.
