Michael Redgrave, Margaret Lockwood and Edward Rigby star in this classic drama directed by Carol Reed.

In a depression-ravaged northern English mining town, a group of miners refuse to work a dangerous seam.

The ensuing struggle sees two friends escape their underground destiny; Davey Fenwick (Redgrave) wins a university education while Joe Gowlan (Emlyn Williams) leaves for a life of commerce.

As they grow up their paths and love lives cross culminating in a meeting back in their home town.
