At the turn of the last century, the Winslow family fight to clear the name of their youngest son, a thirteen-year-old naval cadet who has been accused of stealing money.

Sir Robert Morton (Jeremy Northam), a famed lawyer, agrees to defend the boy, but as the case becomes a national obsession, the family grows ever more distraught.
