A little boy is born into an orthodox Chassidic community in Poland in 1905.

The 'miracle' only child of elderly parents, he is much loved and adored.

Clever and studious - all expectations are that their pride and joy, Rachmil, will grow up to be scholar and a rabbi bringing honour to the family. Then at the age of eleven he witnesses the brutal murder of his saintly father and, soon after, his mother dies from cancer.

The old life of timeless certainty is over. Always questioning and curious, always rebellious and a voracious reader of 'Godless' books he increasingly kicks against the narrow confines of the traditions that define his existence - the religious bigotry, the fanaticism. He longs to venture into a wider world. He also foresees the coming calamity that will engulf the Jews. In 1930 he decides to leave Poland forever and begin a life of travel - just in time, as the catastrophe closes in behind him.

He makes his home in London where he falls in love with a 'shiksa' , the fiery flame-haired Pat.....
