Neurologic Differential Diagnosis (2 Rev ed)

See all formats and editions

This second edition of "Neurologic Differential Diagnosis" brings together clinical neurologic diagnosis with the recent addition of non-invasive neurodiagnostic tests.

The combination makes for an economical approach by the neurologist in his attempt to give the patient the best in patient care.

In the first part, the characteristic syndromes are discussed according to their location in the nervous system.

It is assumed that the physician has made a provisional diagnosis, that is, on the basis of the information obtained, has localized the process.

The neuro-anatomic and physiologic basis of the symptomatology and the etiologic processes responsible for such localization are described.

This is important for a check on the correctness of the physician's topical diagnosis and is helpful in etiologic considerations.

In the second part, it is assumed that the physician is unable to localize the process on the basis of single findings.

Help, therefore, is needed in interpreting the localizing value of the main findings or symptoms.

In this part an attempt is made to help in the process that results in a diagnosis based on the correct interpretation of neurologic symptoms. Their importance is analyzed according to the origin of the symptoms, the involved body part, or other considerations.

This allows an orderly classification of symptoms according to localization of lesions.

This, in turn, facilitates the etiologic considerations of the significance of various leading symptoms.

In some longer sections of this book, a "mirror" method is used as the basis for the differential diagnostic analysis of a particular leading symptom.
