As the girth steadily grows wider And the once strong legs begin to bow The firm straight back slowly bends over While the hands fumble and loose their grip Whilst the mind plays up and begins to flit Looking through the young eyes in an old head Just knowing what we want to say Yet something else comes out instead The stairs seem much steeper now As you climb them to go to bed It looks quite light outside you think Forgetting that it is daytime instead The whole thing seems so exhausting as you try to catch your breath You weren't like this yesterday for the mind is very clear Sharp as the razor blade you used all through last year Cataracts impede the vision, no on your glasses there is a smear The silence is broken only, by the soft ticking of the clock A cloud of dust arises as you shuffle across the floor The once firm tread has gone now just the slippers and the sock The hearing is slowly going, was that a knock upon the door?No I'm not getting older this said with a firm and steady grip Passing time just clouds the issue plants thoughts inside the head Why it seems like only yesterday I was sailing on my ship I'm very sure of everything for that is what the nurse just said
