This is often the most challenging book in the B Series for children learning to read.

There are no capital letters, and children only have the small letters 'a, b, c, g, h, i, n, o, p, t, u' to deal with.

However, the letters 'b' and 'p' are used in CVC nouns, and this can be a stumbling block for children who are not confident with the phoneme/grapheme correspondence of each of these letters.

The high frequency word 'the' is also used. There are neither picture clues nor phonic clues for this word.

Children cannot sound it out as a series of three letters and blend them together.

They have to learn the whole word 'by sight'.
