The Christmas card, which was invented in the middle of the 19th century, took a long time to decide what it was. We have come to expect Christmas cards to picture something pertinent to the holiday season, or at least winter; this was not always the case, as this gathering of oddities suggests. Examples of inexplicable Christmas greetings included here are: moths dressed as witches, a burning cigar, an old shoe, birds enjoying the sight of a spider, and, terriers chasing a rat.
