The affair left an indelible impression; not only did Hemingway model Catherine Barkley in "A farewell to arms" on Agnes, but when he shot himself 40 years and four marriages later - her love letters were by his side.

In 1918, Villard occupied a Milan hospital room next to Hemingway and this work combines Villard's reminiscences with Agnes' diary, her letters to Hemingway, and his letters home.
