Growing Up In Bishop

Two sisters and three brothers grew up in Bishop, Texas in the late 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. They reflect on the experiences they had while Growing Up in Bishop. The book explores the unique beginnings of Bishop, a town that was planned by a dreamer in 1910 and flourished to quickly become the Cotton Capital of the Gulf Coast then fell upon hard times only to revive to the dream after World War II when a new industry moves to town. The five authors arrived in Bishop during the 1940s and lived to benefit from the town organizer's dream to the fruition of the transition from a farming community to a modern small community where new dreams were created.

As they explore their challenges of coming of age in a time when rural farm country slowly converted to the modern world, their stories wind from cotton gins to the local churches to Friday Night Football at its best. Entertaining tales of the daring exploits of three little boys who considered themselves invincible and little girls playing with their dolls. So much changed when the 60s exploded and their carefree childhoods took on summer jobs, feats of courage on the football field, and challenges in their education. They were surrounded by extreme changes in fashion, music, sexual attitudes and the possibilities awaiting them at the University of Texas.
