This information product describes the World Health Organization Multinational MONItering of trends and determinants in CArdiovascular disease Project (MONICA Project), the largest and longest research project ever undertaken on myocardial infarction and stroke.

The study covered 38 populations in 21 countries from Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America. The objectives of the study were to measure the trends in cardiovascular mortality and coronary heart disease and stroke morbidity and to assess the extent to which these trends are related to changes in known risk factors, daily living habits, health care or major socioeconomic features measured simultaneously in defined communities.

The monograph explains what the study is about, gives descriptions of the participating populations and the local study teams and includes abstracts from MONICA and collaborative publications. The CD-ROM accompanying the monograph contains the MONICA manual quality assurance reports, data books, unpublished appendices to manuscripts and a 20 per cent random sample of most of the MONICA database.
