Britain's premier veterans organization has been helping former service people and their families since the end of World War I.

The large number of appalling casualties suffered by British forces 1914-1918 helped set the primary emphasis of the Legion, which has always been on aiding those disabled or in need.

Over the years, veterans of World War II, Korea, the Falklands and Northern Ireland have been added to the ranks.Although associated by the British public with the World Wars, the Legion has continued to grow as veterans of subsequent campaigns join the organization.

Membership in the Legion now stands at 750, 000, with 80,000 new members joining each year. After over 40 years of service, the British Legion was granted the coveted Royal title.

To celebrate its 75th Anniversary, the Legion has issued its official history, written by famed military historian Richard Humble, best known for his account of Captain Bligh and the Bounty mutiny.
