It could be because a) coloring in puts less stress on working memory (a mental mechanism that people use to sustain attention) – Ostensibly, it is easier to remain focused if an activity is right in front of you b) the complex-ity of the selection of coloring materials is sufficient to prevent people drift-ing off into worrying or ruminating c) the process of coloring in requires fo-cus to keep colors within the lines.
