See all formats and editions

The next few decades will see an unprecedented scale of urban growth in the developing world, particularly in Africa and Asia, greatly increasing the number and proportion of young people in towns and cities.

This youth supplement to the "2007 State of World Population" report focuses on the challenges and promises of urbanisation as they affect young people, with profiles of the lives of young men and women from seven cities: Tianjin, China; Mumbai, India; Cairo, Egypt; San Salvador, El Salvador; Rufisque, Senegal; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Their stories give a sense of the pressures, opportunities and risks of urban living for young people; and seek to help promote the right of young people in the world's cities to lives of opportunity free of poverty, violence, and abuse.
