Fifteen-year-old Jonathon has book smarts and a brilliant mind for technology but is only beginning to discover young love. When he finds himself enthralled with a beautiful classmate, Leana, he turns to what he knows best and decides to build a machine to help him win her affection. He aptly names his machine REMY (for Rapid Eye Movement that occurs during dreams) and has high hopes that if he can convince her to come over and use his machine, his programmed dreams will lead her to dream about him instead of her hunky boyfriend.

Before long, Jonathon notices strangely comical behavior from his life-long nanny and confidante, Lulu. He finds himself competing with his best friend Jasper and begins getting odd vibes from his long-time friend Kate. Jonathon cautiously suspects them all of meddling with his machine behind his back.

Trying to stay focused on his original intent with Leana, Jonathon struggles to fix the chaos he's created.

He also believes that his parents' troubled marriage could be saved with the help of REMY. An elaborate scheme on the night of his first dance backfires, causing Jonathon to reconsider all he has done. Making a few mistakes and learning a few hard lessons along the way, he discovers that with matters of the heart, it takes more than a machine to figure things out.
