"This book is a history of the British Geological Survey, but a history with a difference.

It is a highly personal and vivid account of the many changes which affected the role, status, management and organisation of BGS during the latter part of the twentieth century.

During this time, substantial shifts in government thinking concerning the operation and funding of public service organisations meant that the role and operation of many; including the BGS, were scrutinised, and numerous fundamental changes were made.
