This unique historical and archeological guidebook to Portugal introduces the reader and traveller to the foundations of the modern state from the earliest period down to medieval times.

The historical perspective is given tangible substance by the identification, description and location of historical sites that relate to the periods in question.

Much of the research of James M. Anderson, Ph.D., has focused on the ancient cultures and languages of the Iberian peninsula. He has resided in Spain and Portugal on and off for ten years and has often been sponsored by grants from the US and Canadian governments and The University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

As guide and resource person, Professor Anderson has designed and accompanied numerous adult education tours both for The University of Calgary and for the University of British Columbia.
