Published in time for Remembrance Day 2008, the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM commemorates the veterans who are no longer among us.

With an introduction by Henry Allingham, 110, only survivor of the Battle of the Somme, and Britain's oldest living man, Max Arthur's new book will expand the circle of contributors by interviewing the families of First World War veterans.

They will reveal how the war affected the families down the generations.

There are some famous name possibilities, most obviously Shirley Williams as her mother lost her fiance and her brother in the trenches.

But the war touched every family in Britain, and the IWM archives plus the Peter Liddle collection at the University of Leeds hold many memoirs that can be included too.

Max will visit Europe and America to interview the last survivors on the German, French, Russian and other armies.

There are 40-50 veterans worldwide, and while British interest in the era is very parochial, the sheer age and life experiences of some of these men will make for some immensely moving stories. These men have left their mark on history, and they cast a far longer shadow than the 'band of brothers/greatest generation'.

The First World War remains the pivotal event of the 20th century.

So we can supplement the personal stories with a concluding chapter to set the war in context.

This will be aimed at the supermarket readership that has shown such support for THE LAST POST.

The book will be endorsed and supported by The British Legion and its 470,000 members.
