The Scouts and Raiders were born in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when the US Navy was in need of special troops to conduct reconnaissance for beach assaults.

From Operation Torch in November 1942, they saw action in North Africa, Europe, China and the Pacific, where they undertook varied missions.

This book examines the history, organization, uniforms, equipment and missions of the Scouts and Raiders along with those of the Underwater Demolition Teams, the Naval Combat Demolition Units and the Office of Strategic Services operational swimmers.
