It all started with a sea fight. Ezra Bond came out of the smashing set-to as the master of the "Forbearance" and of the bewitching young Lady Helen, who was transferred to his ship from the sinking British attacker.

Ezra carried Lady Helen down to St. Eustatius, that fabulous West Indies island, where the local representative of the rebellious American colonies tried to persuade him to go into gunpowder-running.
