Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism - Part 2 : The Antimonarchical Conspiracy

See all formats and editions

In this second volume of his Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism, Barruel shows how the conspiracy of what he calls 'the Sect', led by Voltaire, d'Alembert, and Diderot, the sophisters of impiety and rebellion, passed from the hatred of Christianity to the hatred of kings. He describes the sophisters' political systems, founded on the teachings of Montesquieu and Rousseau; the coalition of the plot against the Thrones with the plot against the Altar; the inundation of anti-monarchical books; and the attacks against the aristocracy in France. He then exposes the secrecy of the Freemasons in his country, particularly of their occult lodges, detailing their origins and their systems, and, finally, supplies proof of a coalition with the sophisters, orchestrated to bring about the destruction of the monarchy.
