This report presents papers from a conference which was principally targeted at the user market to provide increased awareness of products, and guidance in their selection and operation.

The programme reviewed the three main application areas of stationary, traction and small portable power sources in terms of new products, user information and near-term developments.

Additionally, the impact of improved technology, the various proposals for the collection and recycling of battery components and possible statutory legislation for the protection of the environment was considered.

The papers under "Stationary batteries" cover - current technology, charging methods and operational experience. "Environmental" deals with - recent legislation on scrap batteries and cells, electricity at work and COSHH regulations, and cells and batteries in potentially explosive atmospheres with particular reference to European standardization. "Traction batteries" reviews - lead-acid batteries for motive power, charging methods, charging management for vehicle batteries and an inductively coupled battery charging system. "Portable batteries" discusses - rechargeable batteries, charging methods and a user's view of NiCd cells. "Monitoring controls" includes - computer-based monitoring in standby power applications, power management, and battery monitoring and testing applications. "New technology" describes - an ultra-thin film battery, standby power using an aluminium-air system and high-performance NiCd cells for electric vehicle applications.

A supplementary paper covers modelling and dynamic simulation of lead-acid batteries used as energy storage in stand-alone renewable power systems.

A delegates list and exhibitor details are also included.
