In the first of a series of books on the history of public transport in Northern Ireland, Bryan Boyle tells the inside story of the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board, an early pioneer in the field of public ownership of transport.

It was set up by the government of Northern Ireland in 1935, with a monopoly over all road transport in the province outisde Belfast.

Unlike London Transport, the NIRTB also had a road freight monopoly and, although this is primarily a book about buses, it also includes pictures of road freight vehicles.

The main emphasis of the book is on the vehicles themselves, some of which remained in service until 1965, and all types of bus built for the Board are illustrated, as well as some of the lorries.

Full fleet listings are included.
