Today, the chemical industry faces the challenges of coping with the possible depletion of natural resources as well as with the growing societal demands for safer, better and more convenient products. The main focus of chemical activity is the conversion of various base metals into substances and materials with new chemical and physical properties, a process that must now meet sustainability requirements. In addition, other associated activities, such as the chemical supply chain, performance measurements and different types of management tasks, must also meet sustainability standards. Achieving sustainable chemistry is not only essential in order for the chemical industry to remain competitive but also for a society and the environment to be healthy. Key to sustainable chemistry are development of innovative and cleaner technologies, efficient use of resources (including renewable materials), and application of appropriate business models, performance measurements, and better integrated management.
