Cleverly jumping into an open carpetbag, he makes his way, by train, to faraway Le Clerc.

There he meets Hammett, an orphan boy whose only wish is to make a sad orphan girl happy.

Pignoli agrees to help and the two become fast friends as they embark upon a good skittle skattle adventure.
