E. M. Delafield was a prolific English author, best known for her largely autobiographical 'Diary of a Provincial Lady', which took the form of a journal of an upper-middle class Englishwoman living in a Devon village of the 1930's.

Delafield's novels are noted for their elegant and sardonic wit and by a refusal to sentimentalise the lives and conditions of her characters.
